Ready or Not #249: Shake, Rattle, and Roll

Do you remember the song, “Shake, Rattle & Roll” written by Jesse Stone and made popular by Bill Haley & His Comets?  (I am dating myself now.)  “Shake, rattle and roll.  Shake, rattle and roll. Shake, rattle and roll,” and so the song goes.  (Try saying that without singing it in your head.)

The whole reason that I brought this song up was because when I read about “The Great Utah Shake Out” my brain kept singing it over and over and over.  What is The Great Utah Shake Out”?   It is the government officials of the great State of Utah trying to get its citizens to prepare themselves for an earthquake.  One way that our emergency officials are bringing the importance of being prepared for an earthquake is by holding “The Great Utah Shake Out” at 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, April 17th.

What do our leaders want you to do when the ground starts to “shake, rattle and roll”?  They want you to “Drop, Cover and Hold On!”  They want you to have a “Grab-and-Go” kit.  They want you to think ahead and make a family plan.  They want you to evaluate your resources (insurance, food, WATER, etc.)  They want YOU to be prepared.

Hmmm.  Where have I heard that before?

I visited the www.shakeout.org/utah/ site and it is a great site!  There are a couple of real eye-opening videos that you can watch that give you a little more insight in what you need to do to be as safe as you possibly can be during an earthquake (that is the “Drop, Cover and Hold On!” part).

I don’t’ know about you, but I have received “The Triangle of Life” e-mail that advises you not to drop and cover, but to take different actions.  This site advises against that approach and then it explains why.  After reading their reasoning behind NOT using the triangle of life, I’m going to stick with the drop, cover and hold on idea.  It makes me feel safer.

One of the videos that I thought was kind of cute was the “Make a Grab-and-Go Kit.”  The kids will get a kick out of it, but I liked it because it made that point that the kit can’t make itself; you have to be the one that puts it together to begin with.  Imagine that.

It seems like I’ve heard that before too.

Take some time to check out this earthquake get-yourself-prepared website and then sign up.  Sign up for what?  The Utah preparedness officials feel so strongly about this that they want ALL of the individuals, families, schools and businesses, to participate and to practice for THE big earthquake by taking part in the biggest earthquake preparedness drill ever held in the State of Utah!  I’ve signed up and at 10:15 a.m. on Tuesday, April 17th I am going to be taking cover under my desk at work – and holding on!

One of the videos stated that a really big earthquake hits Utah about every 350 to 400 years; it has been 350 years since the last one.  Visit The Great Utah Shake Out site today to learn more about what is expected of you and your family before, during and after an earthquake and then start practicing your best drop, cover and hold on position.  And you don’t have to live in Utah to participate.  Just do it.

After you finish practicing, go get your water stored, check out your insurance policy, read some more of my ‘get yourself prepared’ articles and for goodness sakes, get your 72 hour kit together.  And do it now.
